Entry Conditions
The Main Bar has several conditions that must be complied with for entry on a normal Wednesday Night.
These conditions exist as part of the license and as part of the Student Union Social Surcharge Structure.
A Code of Conduct is also expected to be adhered to by Students in either Bar. Remember: Your actions are recorded on CCTV in all areas of the bars.
For any queries or if you have any questions please contact the Student Union President.
The Licensee for the SU Bars is held by Bryony Hancock, Head of Student Services.

FAQ's
Q1 Why must I have paid the Social Surcharge to gain entry? It's the Student's Bar
- A typical Wednesday Night costs several thousand pounds to put on; once you have included Bar Staff wages, the Bands, lighting, sound and Security. A small percentage of the overall Social Surcharge goes towards this.
- Therefore, if you have paid your Social Surcharge, why should someone who has not paid, be allowed to watch and take part in something you have helped pay for?
- It is not fair on those who have paid the Social Surcharge.
Q2 Why do everyone's ID Cards have to be swiped? It causes queues!
By taking and swiping your card we are doing 3 things:
- Checking you have paid your Social Surcharge
- Identifying you as a Harper Adams Student
- Logging the number of people who have entered the Bar
Entry into the Bar can be swift if everyone has their ID Card ready, is patient for a very small amount of time, and if the SU Executive on the card swipe system are allowed to work quickly unhindered.
Q3 I've been at a Sports Social in the bar for three hours! I've been playing and representing Harper. I haven't paid my Social Surcharge, but I've been spending my money at the Bar! It's not fair! Let me in!
- No. You must have paid your Social Surcharge in order to play for Harper Teams. So if you use that excuse you will also get yourself banned from playing for the Team until you have paid your Social Surcharge! And anyway, playing for a Sports Team doesn't cover the cost of running the nights' events, so again, no.
Q4 Ok, well I've paid my Social Surcharge, but why do you force us out to swipe in? As stated in FAQ2, it is so we can check you have paid your Social Surcharge, identify you as a Harper Adams Student and log the number of people there could be in the Bar at any one time.
- Once the entry swipe system has begun you must have paid your Social Surcharge to be in the Main Bar. We aren't stopping you from continuing with your Team Social after that!
Remember: The Student's Union isn't free to run. Wednesday nights are not free to run. Without the Social Surcharge neither the Student's Union, Wednesday Nights, either Bar, the Shop, or Sports Teams would run, exist or happen.
