What to Bring

The official list of what to bring issued by Harper can be found in the welcome pack.

  • But these are a few of the things last years Freshers (aka your 2nd year) found useful last year along with a few of their top tips:
  • Door stop/wedge (keep your door open when you're in to meet new people)
  • A black tie outfit for Fresher’s Ball
  • For Lads -DJ if you have one or black trousers/kilt, shirt and tie (you can buy a Harper tie or bowtie if you want when you get here)
  • For Girls –dresses or a skirt or black trousers & top (would recommend you do not wear a long/floor length dress or one with particular sentimental value as drinks do get spilt).
  • Old clothes that you don’t mind getting trashed!
  • Overalls (essential for agriculture and engineering students & can be great for fancy dress!)
  • Lab coats - can be brought on Registration day
  • Cheap shoes (you don’t want to wear your best heels, especially not suede ones to the bar for example if we have a foam party!)
  • Favourite music & speakers to get the party started!
  • Your teddy
  • Sports Kit (for the Harris Shield and there are sample training sessions for the various sports)
  • Swimming kit (the pool in Newport offers cheap entry to students if you get a Flexi Card)
  • A couple of mugs, tea &/or coffee for making drinks with your new friends
  • A plate, bowl, knife, fork & spoons, necessary for making breakfast if you’re in catered halls but want a lie in!
  • Washing up liquid, needed if you do make breakfast / drinks!
  • A small fridge - useful but not essential (PAT tested of course, useful for a few chilled drinks or just a bottle of milk!)
  • Random fancy dress items
  • A LOUD ALARM CLOCK (essential if you have 9am lectures on a Thursday!)
  • Alka-seltzers
  • Pad of paper and pens (for lectures, you will need to do some work!)
  • A laundry pen (as clothes you buy during the year will also need labelling & its much easier than sewing name tags in!)
  • Coat hangers
  • And last but by no means least - an open mind!
